This smart shelf was developed for SaSa’s cosmetic retail store at Hong Kong International Airport. The installation turned fragrance testers into interactive retail touchpoints, connecting physical product handling with digital content and data collection.
The main challenge was RFID accuracy within a small reading area. Multiple tags, tester positions, shelf structure, lighting, and nearby hardware could interfere with detection, so the system needed stable pick-up and return recognition.
When shoppers picked up a fragrance tester, the shelf triggered related video content on the display. The system recorded pick-up, return, count, viewing time, and product selection preference, then sent the data to the client’s backend server in real time.
The shelf gave shoppers a more direct way to explore products while helping the client understand real behaviour at the shelf level. Product interest, engagement time, and selection patterns became measurable for marketing analysis.
